The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has launched a nationwide campaign offering free registration and renewal for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). This initiative, named the STORM Initiative, aims to increase access to healthcare services by removing all registration and renewal fees. It also eliminates the standard one-month waiting period for individuals signing up or renewing their NHIS membership. The campaign is active from April 15 to May 31, 2026.
This move is designed to speed up Ghana's progress towards Universal Health Coverage, a goal where everyone can access essential health services without financial hardship. The NHIA plans to deploy staff across all districts to reach people in communities, markets, churches, mosques, transport hubs, schools, and workplaces. Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, the Chief Executive Officer of the NHIA, highlighted this as a historic moment for the NHIS. For the first time, both fees and the waiting period are waived simultaneously.
The STORM Initiative directly supports the government's Free Primary Healthcare Programme. This programme, launched on April 15, 2026, by President John Dramani Mahama, initially targets 150 underserved districts. The plan is to expand it nationwide by 2028. Services will include health screenings like those for high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as care for mothers and children, vaccinations, and treatment for common illnesses. Identification will be needed, either with the Ghana Card or an active NHIS card.
While primary healthcare services are now more accessible, an active NHIS card remains crucial for accessing specialist care at higher-level hospitals. Without it, patients face full out-of-pocket expenses, which can be a significant financial burden. The NHIS also provides access to treatments for long-term illnesses not fully covered under the scheme, such as those supported by the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as MahamaCares. These funds require active NHIS membership for beneficiaries.
Dr. Bampoe urged the public to use this limited-time opportunity. Fees and the waiting period will return on June 1, 2026. He also reminded existing members to renew their cards promptly using the mobile shortcode *929#, the MyNHIS mobile app, or at NHIS offices. The NHIA wants every Ghanaian to understand that the NHIS card is essential for accessing free primary healthcare, specialist referrals, and support from the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.
