The Ghanaian government’s decision to evacuate its citizens from South Africa following xenophobic attacks has been strongly defended. Ernesto Yeboah, leader of the Economic Fighters' League (EFL), called criticism of the evacuation efforts from South African politician Julius Malema “complete rubbish”. Mr. Yeboah stated on Saturday, May 30, that protecting Ghanaian citizens is the government's top priority. He believes this action shows responsible leadership in a dangerous situation.

According to Mr. Yeboah, Ghana's action is a testament to its commitment to safeguarding its people. He argued that the wave of attacks in South Africa cannot be understood without looking at its deep economic problems. Decades after apartheid, many Black South Africans still face poverty and joblessness. Mr. Yeboah noted that many live in informal settlements made from cardboard and metal sheets. He described conditions in some parts of South Africa as worse than Ghana's low-income areas.

These continuing economic problems between Black and White South Africans create anger towards migrants. Mr. Yeboah explained that South Africa’s education system and past governments did not fix historical unfairness. This has led to lasting resentment and social tension. He believes these unsolved issues contribute to the anti-foreigner feelings seen today. The EFL leader views South Africa as a nation still dealing with trauma. He also linked Mr. Malema's comments to South Africa’s competitive political scene. The EFF party lost ground in the last election.

Mr. Yeboah suggested that Mr. Malema’s party faced political pressure during the election. Opponents portrayed the EFF as favouring open borders. This narrative suggested migrants were taking jobs. Such ideas appealed to frustrated South African voters. Mr. Yeboah believes Mr. Malema's attack on Ghana's evacuation is an effort to balance opposing anti-African views with his political appeal. Despite South African political pressures, Mr. Yeboah insists Ghana's government acted correctly. Protecting citizens from violence is a government's main duty. The evacuation initiative shows this responsibility.
