Ghana's Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) and Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement aims to improve how quickly the agencies share information. The signing took place on May 5, 2026, at the NDLEA Headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
This move is a direct response to the growing scale and complexity of drug trafficking in West Africa. Brig. Gen. Maxwell Obuba Mantey, Director-General of NACOC, highlighted that no single country can fight this problem alone. He emphasized the need for stronger teamwork to break apart criminal groups operating across the region. The MoU is intended to move beyond just a ceremonial act. It seeks concrete results like better intelligence sharing and joint operations.
The drug trade is a significant challenge for regional stability and economic development in West Africa. Proceeds from illegal drugs often fund other criminal activities. This undermines legitimate businesses and can lead to increased corruption. Ghana and Nigeria are major players in the region. Their cooperation is crucial for any effective strategy. This partnership builds on long-standing ties between the two nations.
Brig. Gen. Mantey stated that the agreement marks a significant milestone for deeper cooperation. He stressed that its true value would be in its implementation. He reaffirmed Ghana's commitment to this shared goal. Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, Chairman/CEO of NDLEA, described the partnership as a cornerstone of regional security. He added that the MoU provides a clear framework for their joint efforts.
This heightened cooperation is expected to lead to more effective disruption of drug smuggling routes. It could also mean better prosecution of drug traffickers. Officials on both sides have warned that those involved in illicit drug trafficking will now face a united front. Both countries plan to innovate and strengthen their strategies. This aims to make their communities safer. Investors and governments will watch closely to see the practical outcomes of this agreement.
