Israeli Settlers Torch West Bank Mosques After Deadly Clashes

Attacks follow a violent confrontation that left six dead, escalating tensions in the occupied territory.

Israeli settlers set fire to two mosques in the occupied West Bank early on Sunday, defacing buildings with graffiti. These arson attacks followed a deadly clash on Friday that resulted in the deaths of four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers. The incident marks a significant escalation in the volatile region, drawing immediate condemnation from Palestinian authorities. The attacks targeted mosques in Palestinian villages near Nablus and Tulkarm. Settlers spray-painted Hebrew slogans, including “Jewish revenge,” on the walls of the torched buildings. Palestinian officials described these actions as part of a broader pattern of aggression, intensifying into what they termed “systematic pogroms” across the West Bank. This latest surge in violence fits into a troubling trend of escalating conflict in the West Bank. United Nations and Palestinian Authority figures indicate dozens of Palestinians have been killed and hundreds wounded in settler-related clashes this year. The Israeli military confirmed that troops found graffiti and signs of arson in Qusra, near several large Israeli settlements, and are actively searching for suspects. Abdel Azim Wadi, head of the village council in Qusra, reported that settlers torched a newly completed mosque in his village. He stated, “The mosque was in its final stage and was ready to receive worshippers. It had already been furnished with couches. They set it on fire and spray-painted Hebrew slogans on its walls.” The Palestinian Authority, responsible for the section of the West Bank where Friday's shootings occurred, condemned the incident as a generalized assault on Palestinians. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, facing an election in October, has ordered a major security operation against what he calls terrorism against Israeli civilians. His government, which includes far-right members like Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, advocates for the annexation of the West Bank. This territory was captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war. An Israeli military official stated that such violence by Israelis diverts the defence force’s attention from its primary mission of defence and counter-terrorism. Over the weekend, Israeli forces arrested more than 130 individuals, including suspected weapons traffickers and Hamas operatives. These arrests were part of a security clampdown across the West Bank. Most countries and United Nations bodies consider Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal, a position Israel rejects. The Palestinians seek the West Bank as the core of a future independent state. Israel, however, cites biblical and historical ties to the land, and Netanyahu's government has rapidly expanded settlements. The international community is closely watching the situation. Pope Leo expressed deep concern over the worsening violence, calling for negotiations to achieve a just political solution. He also urged a rejection of actions that violate the respect and status quo of holy sites for all religious faiths. The continued expansion of settlements and the escalating violence pose significant challenges to any future peace prospects in the region.
