The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested one Chinese national and seven Ghanaians. This took place during an operation targeting illegal mining in Oseikokrom. The operation occurred in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region. It happened on Thursday, May 21.
The task force was acting on intelligence. They found an active illegal mining site. The suspects reportedly tried to escape. However, officers successfully intercepted them. The operation also resulted in the seizure of valuable equipment. Two Toyota Hilux pickups were taken. Two excavators were also seized. A pump-action gun was recovered from the site.
This action fits into broader efforts to combat illegal mining. This practice, often called 'galamsey', causes significant environmental damage. It destroys cocoa farms and forest reserves. Major water bodies are also polluted. The economic cost includes damage to agricultural land. This impacts Ghana's cocoa production, a key export commodity. Previous operations by NAIMOS have targeted similar sites across the country.
Dominic Buah, Director of Operations at NAIMOS, stated the goal. He described the raids as "surgical". The Secretariat aims to dismantle illegal mining networks. These networks are responsible for environmental degradation. NAIMOS reports that the Chinese suspect, Huang Weiye,38, is under further investigation. He will be handed to the Ghana Immigration Service. The seven Ghanaian suspects are with the Antoakrom Police Station.
These arrests signify continued government action. The focus remains on protecting Ghana's natural resources. Further "surgical raids" are planned for other hotspots. The effectiveness of these raids hinges on sustained enforcement. The economic impact of unchecked illegal mining is substantial. Protecting water bodies is crucial for public health and agriculture. These actions signal a commitment to environmental protection. They also aim to safeguard economic activities dependent on these resources. The public will watch for sustained prosecution and the impact on illegal mining activities across Ghana.
