Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to greatly improve the support systems for former party executives and committed members. He stated this commitment while speaking in the Northern Region. This pledge addresses worries that loyal party members might be neglected after their service. The aim is to create a system that helps individuals who dedicated their lives to the NDC but later encounter difficulties.
The remarks came after the Paramount Chief of the Tamale Divisional Area, Idrissu Mohammed, highlighted the issue. The chief, who is also a former party organiser, urged the NDC leadership to pay more attention to the welfare of former executives and grassroots supporters. He warned that ignoring loyal members could discourage younger people from fully committing to the party. He also reminded leaders about unresolved issues of election-related violence. Many young people sacrifice their time and safety for political parties. It is therefore essential for leaders to show continued care for their well-being.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia acknowledged that supporting former party officials and old cadres has been a long-standing challenge for the NDC. While he was General Secretary, he started a "Heroes Fund." This fund was meant to help former executives and loyal members facing hardship after years of service. The goal was to address small difficulties experienced by these individuals. He explained that the fund did not work as planned because many misunderstood its purpose. Since becoming National Chairman, he has established a Welfare Department to coordinate help for party members needing it. This department will assist those who have served the party and later face age or financial difficulties. The NDC wants to reciprocate their sacrifices.
The NDC Chairman assured supporters that the party leadership is committed to building a more responsive welfare structure. They aim to achieve this before their current term ends. He stated that by the end of their term, the NDC should be able to confidently say that it supports its members in need. The Paramount Chief had earlier praised the NDC for engaging with supporters. He prayed for the success of the party's nationwide tour. He also called for ongoing efforts to address youth concerns and maintain party unity. This unity is crucial for the NDC's long-term future.
