Nigerian opposition unites behind two key figures

Two major Nigerian opposition leaders have switched parties. Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso have joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). This occurred because of a major political shift before the next presidential election.

Both politicians previously finished in the top four of the 2023 presidential race. Obi came third. Kwankwaso finished fourth. They are now exploring the possibility of running together. This would challenge the current President Bola Tinubu. They were previously part of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar was also in the ADC. He finished second in the last election.

This move could reshape Nigeria's political direction. The economy faces challenges like high inflation. Oil revenue remains vital for government spending. The opposition seeks to present a stronger front. Previously, Obi and Kwankwaso joined the ADC just nine months ago. However, that alliance ran into legal disputes over leadership. Obi blamed the government for these problems. "The same Nigerian state and its agents that created unnecessary crises and hostility within the Labour Party that forced me to leave now appear to be finding their way into the ADC," Obi stated.

Political analyst Bala Yusuf commented on the development. This could significantly alter the electoral map. "If the NDC fields Obi as its presidential candidate and Kwankwaso as vice-president, they will definitely give the ruling APC a run for their money at the polls," Yusuf told the BBC. The leaders have not yet announced their presidential candidate. This has been a point of division in past Nigerian political groups. President Tinubu took office in May 2023. He has not yet made a public statement on this latest opposition strategy. Nigeria's next general election is scheduled for early January 2025.

The decision by Obi and Kwankwaso to align within the NDC could consolidate a significant bloc of opposition support. Their combined popularity across different regions of Nigeria presents a formidable challenge. Obi is popular with young voters in the south. Kwankwaso has strong influence in the northern areas. The NDC welcomed them at its national headquarters in Abuja. Their focus now is on national unity and youth opportunities. They also aim to reduce internal conflicts among opposition parties.
