Three people have been arrested by the Eastern Regional Police Command. They are suspected of possessing a large amount of Indian hemp. The suspects also allegedly tried to bribe police officers with GHS 100,000. This incident occurred during an operation on May 10, 2026. Police acted on a tip about narcotics.

The operation was led by the Regional Police Intelligence Department. They received information about drugs being stored near Akosombo-Bonya. Police watched an area near Krobo Girls Senior High School. They intercepted a Hyundai Rhino truck carrying registration number GR 5724-15. The truck was later found in a secluded area near Atua Government Hospital.

Officers observed suspects moving sacks from the Hyundai truck to a Howo Zonda Tipper Truck. The tipper truck had registration number GN 7948-21. The initial suspects fled into the bush. Police secured both vehicles and their contents. A search revealed 1,600 parcels of suspected Indian hemp. These were hidden within the trucks.

One suspect, Solomon Tettey, aged 39, a welder, approached the officers. He claimed ownership of the vehicles and the suspected drugs. Mr. Tettey suggested the consignment was destined for Nigeria. He then allegedly offered police GHS 100,000. This was an attempt to stop the investigation. Police pretended to accept the bribe to collect evidence.

The statement indicated Mr. Tettey sent GHS 90,000 via Mobile Money. He also provided GHS 10,000 in cash. Following this exchange, the Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit and Odumase Police arrested Mr. Tettey. Two others, Joshua Nartey and Teye Nartey, were arrested later. They appeared at the Regional Police Headquarters.

All three suspects and the seized items have been transferred to the Regional Criminal Investigation Department. They will undergo further investigation. The Ghana Police Service stated its commitment to fighting drug trafficking. They also affirmed their dedication to professional conduct. The police service aims to maintain integrity and pursue drug trafficking syndicates vigorously. This case highlights the substantial value of illicit goods and the risks involved in their movement. It also points to the temptation of bribery when large sums of money are at stake. The authorities are reinforcing their efforts to curb illegal activities.
