Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has firmly denied reports of inadequate feeding for athletes during the recent African Athletics Championship. He stated on May 18 that these claims were largely based on the account of a single athlete whose story reportedly changed multiple times. Mr. Adams indicated that this athlete's shifting narrative raised doubts about the credibility of his complaints.

Mr. Adams explained that the athlete's initial claim of being served half an egg evolved to one egg, and then to one piece of chicken before stating he received two pieces. The minister also noted that this athlete later claimed to consume nine eggs daily while training in South Africa. No prior requests for special dietary needs had been submitted to the organizers, according to Mr. Adams. He added that any athlete requiring a special diet should have filled out a form with the Local Organising Committee (LOC).

The minister argued that focusing on one athlete's assertions overlooked the positive experiences of many others. He pointed out that athletes from South Africa were happy with the food provided, but media attention focused on the single complaint. Mr. Adams asserted that the catering, managed by the LOC, was a success. Meal preparations were organized in shifts to ensure timely service. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner were served promptly throughout the competition without any issues.

Mr. Adams reiterated that there was no shortage of food. He also confirmed that no national federation had requested specialized meals for any athletes. He stressed that the Local Organising Committee did not receive any formal requests for athletes with specific dietary concerns. Initially, some athletes complained about the spicy nature of local meals. Mr. Adams thought this might be the focus for media coverage.

However, adjustments were made after organizers became aware of these concerns. By the third day, balancing of spicy and less spicy options was introduced. This ensured athletes not accustomed to very spicy food could be accommodated. Mr. Adams concluded that there were no problems with the quantity or quality of food supplied during the championship. He stated there was absolutely no problem with the food.
