Swiss Armed Forces Seek Deeper Peacekeeping Ties with Ghana

    Delegation visits Burma Camp to explore enhanced military training and cooperation.

    A three-member delegation from the Swiss Armed Forces has held high-level discussions with Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) officials. The meeting focused on deepening international cooperation in peacekeeping. It took place at Burma Camp in Accra. The aim is to strengthen joint efforts in military training.

    The visit on Friday, May 22, 2026, centred on Ghana’s considerable experience in peace support operations. Officials explored potential areas of mutual interest. The Ghana Armed Forces provided a detailed overview of its long history in international peacekeeping. This included participation in United Nations missions. It also covered deployments under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Current operational priorities were also highlighted.

    Director General of Internal Peace Support Operations (IPSO), Brigadier General Fuseini Salifu, led the briefing. He detailed Ghana's structure and scope of peacekeeping contributions. Brig Gen Salifu stressed the professionalism and readiness of Ghanaian troops. He commended the Swiss Armed Forces for their support to the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre. Such partnerships bolster Ghana’s peacekeeping capacity. He expressed optimism for expanded cooperation. This includes specialised training and capacity building.

    Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Luedin, Swiss Course Commander, represented the Swiss delegation. He thanked the Ghanaian military for the briefing. Lt Col Luedin reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to the GAF. He indicated Switzerland's intent to increase training opportunities. Ghanaian personnel could participate in technical programs. This is especially for areas needing capacity enhancement. He stressed sustained collaboration and knowledge exchange. This is vital for stronger international peace support operations.

    The engagement underscores Ghana's growing importance as a partner in global security initiatives. The nation’s peacekeeping record is well-established. This visit signals a move towards more targeted and practical cooperation. Strengthening these ties could enhance the effectiveness of future peacekeeping missions.     Senior officials from both countries attended the meeting. For Switzerland, Mr Alan McGarrity and Colonel Michael Freudweiler were present. Representing GAF were Colonel Owusu-Brobbey and Colonel James Sabia. The meeting is part of ongoing efforts to build robust international military partnerships.
