The United States Department of Defence has officially identified two American service members killed during Iranian strikes in Jordan this past weekend. Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, from Carrollton, Texas, and First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, 25, from Ewa Beach, Hawaii, died while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve, the US-led mission against the Islamic State.
Private Gonzales was killed in action on Friday at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base. Lieutenant Feehan died on Saturday. Both soldiers were defending against an Iranian ballistic missile and drone assault. Their deaths underscore the increasing dangers faced by US forces in the Middle East.
This tragedy coincides with a broader spike in violence across the region. US Central Command confirmed a third American service member was killed Saturday in northern Iraq. This occurred during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian drone. These losses bring the total number of US service members killed in combat since hostilities with Iran began to 15. Additionally, two non-combat related deaths have been recorded. Approximately 140 Americans have been wounded during the conflict, with eight suffering severe injuries.
President Donald Trump addressed the escalation in a social media statement. He warned that Iran will face severe consequences for killing American soldiers. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also honoured the fallen on social media, stating their sacrifice stiffens US resolve. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed President Trump will attend a dignified transfer of the soldiers' remains on Tuesday evening.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasised that while the United States remains open to diplomacy, the burden of de-escalation rests with Tehran. Rubio noted perceived internal divisions within the Iranian government regarding the path forward. He stated that Iran's behaviour, including launching missiles and drones, must change for US actions to change. US forces have responded with nine consecutive nights of airstrikes targeting Iranian military command centres, missile launch sites, and maritime surveillance capabilities. State-affiliated media in Iran reported that at least 3,375 people have died within the country since military operations commenced.
Communities in Texas and Hawaii are mourning the loss of the two soldiers. Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a formal statement, expressing condolences for Private Gonzales and Lieutenant Feehan. Lewisville Independent School District noted that Gonzales graduated from Hebron High School in the spring of 2025. The City of Carrollton remembered Gonzales as a national hero. These tributes highlight the profound personal cost of the ongoing conflict.
