A businesswoman has filed a lawsuit at the Commercial Division of the High Court in Accra against an interior decorator and a senior Ghana Police Service officer. The plaintiff, Regina Akweley Oru, seeks multiple declarations, damages, and the recovery of money and property. This action stems from an alleged breach of contract involving the furnishing of her shop. Ms. Oru has named Mary Tsoene Nyatuame, an interior decorator, and Commissioner of Police Joseph Oklu Gyamera as defendants. Commissioner Gyamera is the Director-General of Legal and Prosecutions of the Ghana Police Service. The lawsuit alleges that Ms. Nyatuame failed to deliver on an agreed interior decoration design for Ms. Oru's shop in Nanakrom, Accra. This dispute highlights potential issues in contractual agreements and the conduct of public officials. This case adds to a series of legal actions involving prominent figures and contractual disputes in Ghana. Ms. Oru states she is suing the police officer in his personal capacity for conduct outside his official duties. Ms. Oru is asking the court to declare that Ms. Nyatuame breached both the original agreement and a subsequent agreement. She also seeks a declaration that the continued occupation of her shop premises at Nanakrom is wrongful. The plaintiff requests an order for the defendants to account for all monies received and their utilization. She is seeking the recovery of GHS 98,000, less the proven value of any properly executed work. Additionally, Ms. Oru is asking for GHS 12,500 as the replacement value for CCTV cameras and a digital video recorder. She also demands the immediate return of vacant possession of the Nanakrom shop, its keys, and all items allegedly in the defendants' possession. Further reliefs include mesne profits, special damages, general damages for breach of contract and trespass, and aggravated and exemplary damages. Interest at the prevailing commercial bank rate, solicitor's fees, and costs are also sought. Ms. Oru is a trader in Kente and related fabrics, operating from Spintex Road with a second branch in Nanakrom. The first defendant is an Accra-based interior decorator, and the second defendant is a Commissioner of Police. The High Court has not yet determined the case. The defendants are expected to respond to the claims in accordance with court procedures. This legal action underscores the need for robust contract enforcement and ethical conduct, particularly when public officials are involved.
