Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, has shared a pivotal moment that led him back to Ghana. He recounted a specific encounter with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the United States. This meeting ultimately persuaded him to return to Ghana and enter public service.
At the time of the encounter, Dr Adutwum was deeply involved in education and leadership within the Ghanaian community in the US. He was also actively building schools. He then served as president of the Ghana Association of Southern California. He also held a leadership role in the New Patriotic Party's California chapter. He had also assisted in hosting prominent Ghanaian leaders visiting the US, including former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor.
The turning point came when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo visited the school Dr Adutwum was building in the US. This was his third school construction. President Akufo-Addo inquired if Dr Adutwum would consider returning to Ghana. He asked him to help reform the nation's education system. Dr Adutwum was enjoying his life and career in America. He was initially surprised by the request.
After careful consideration, Dr Adutwum decided to return to Ghana. His decision was motivated by his strong belief in Ghana's proposed education reforms. He saw the potential of initiatives like free secondary education. He felt a personal connection to education as a transformative force. He therefore wanted to contribute to this significant national endeavor.
Upon his return, Dr Adutwum joined Ghana's Parliament. He later served as Deputy Minister and then Minister of Education. He brought his extensive experience as an education entrepreneur to these roles. Within Parliament, he personally funded approximately 150 students for engineering and medical studies. Many of these students have since graduated and are now contributing to various sectors. He also founded a senior high school, which he later gifted to the government. It now bears his name, Osei-Adutwum Senior High School.
Even after leaving his ministerial post, Dr Adutwum's vision extends beyond national boundaries. He is focused on expanding educational entrepreneurship across Africa. His ambition includes building gifted and talented education schools throughout the continent. His goal is to create a network of functioning schools delivering tangible results. He also aims to support education systems in other African nations through structured partnerships and innovative models. This led to the founding of YOA Global Education Partners after his tenure as minister.
Dr Adutwum emphasized that his drive stems from using entrepreneurial skills. He seeks to push beyond conventional limitations. He believes in making a significant impact. He is motivated by helping underprivileged individuals achieve their full potential. He observes that history often features nations transformed by bold leadership. Decisive action by leaders often reshapes a country's fortunes.
