Economic Fighters League calls for broader electoral reform beyond 24 seats

The Economic Fighters League welcomes proportional representation but argues current proposals fall short of true democratic inclusion.

The Economic Fighters League (EFL) has welcomed the government's decision to introduce proportional representation into Ghana's electoral system. This move, announced on July 31, 2026, involves allocating 24 of Parliament's 300 seats through proportional representation. The EFL views this as a significant constitutional milestone, indicating a recognition that Ghana's current electoral model needs fundamental restructuring. Despite this positive step, the EFL argues that the proposed reforms do not go far enough to achieve genuine democratic inclusion. The government's plan also includes an independent study to design and implement the new electoral system. The EFL believes limiting proportional representation to only 24 seats will not adequately address the shortcomings of the country's winner-takes-all system. Ghana's existing first-past-the-post model has historically led to political exclusion, reduced ideological diversity, and denied many citizens meaningful representation in Parliament. The EFL has consistently highlighted these issues. The group states that while the government's acknowledgment of the need for structural reform is encouraging, the current proposal falls short of the electoral transformation Ghana requires. CiC Ernesto Yeboah of the Economic Fighters League stated, "For years, Fighters have consistently argued that Ghana's winner-takes-all electoral model has entrenched political exclusion, discouraged ideological diversity, and denied millions of Ghanaians meaningful representation. We are therefore encouraged that the Government has finally acknowledged that the first-past-the-post system requires structural reform." He emphasized that true proportional representation should ensure every vote carries equal value. It should also ensure Parliament more accurately reflects the political preferences of the electorate. The EFL maintains that merely reserving a limited number of seats does not correct the fundamental distortions of the current system. They describe the government's proposal as "an important beginning; not the destination." The League advocates for a system where Parliament truly reflects the political choices of the Ghanaian people. The EFL also endorsed the government's decision to commission an independent study to guide the implementation of proportional representation. However, they stressed that this exercise must be transparent and inclusive. They called for broad stakeholder participation, including constitutional experts, political parties, civil society organizations, women, persons with disabilities, youth groups, and ordinary citizens. This inclusive process is crucial for designing an electoral system that deepens democracy. Ghana has reached a defining moment in its constitutional development, according to the League. The debate should now focus on designing an electoral system capable of deepening democracy, rather than implementing symbolic reforms. The EFL reaffirmed its longstanding advocacy for electoral reforms. They pledged to continue campaigning for a system that broadens political participation, strengthens accountability, and guarantees equal value for every vote cast. The EFL's commitment underscores the ongoing struggle for a truly representative democracy in Ghana.
