Former Kenyan county governor Okoth Obado has been found guilty of murdering a pregnant 26-year-old university student. The court convicted Obado for orchestrating the killing of Sharon Otieno, with whom he had been having an affair. This significant ruling, delivered on Thursday, also implicated two co-accused in the 2018 crime.
Sharon Otieno's bloodied body was discovered dumped in a thicket outside a small town in western Kenya in 2018. Judge Cecilia Githua stated that Obado "orchestrated a plot to eliminate Otieno," providing the motive, instigation, and funds for the crime. His former personal assistant, Michael Oyamo, "facilitated execution," and former county clerk Caspal Obiero "ensured logistical support and concealment."
This case gripped Kenyans and brought renewed attention to the pervasive issue of violence against women in the country. A national survey in 2022 revealed that at least 34% of women reported experiencing physical violence. The conviction of a high-profile political figure like Obado underscores the judicial system's commitment to addressing such crimes, even when powerful individuals are involved.
A lawyer for the victim's family expressed satisfaction with the verdict, stating, "We are happy with the conviction. We believe that justice has at last been served to Sharon." The trial, which featured 42 witnesses, relied heavily on circumstantial evidence to link the ex-governor and his co-accused to the murder. The court rejected Obado's earlier claims of innocence, despite his lawyer acknowledging the affair.
The murder investigation gained crucial momentum from a journalist's eyewitness account. Barack Oduor of Nation Media Group reported that Otieno had contacted him about her affair with the then-governor. Oduor and Otieno were subsequently kidnapped, but Oduor managed to escape from the speeding vehicle. Two days later, Otieno's body was found with evidence suggesting rape and multiple stab wounds.
Police traced the vehicle used in the abduction, noting its tracking device was deactivated on the day of the alleged crime and reactivated the following day. This was described by the chief prosecutor, Noodin Haji, as a "well-calculated move by the killers to conceal the movement of the vehicle." The investigation confirmed an "intimate relationship" between Obado and Otieno, which led to a pregnancy the governor was unhappy about.
The three convicted individuals are currently in custody awaiting sentencing. This verdict sends a strong message regarding accountability for violence against women, particularly in cases involving public figures.
