Ghana has recommitted to protecting children and supporting vulnerable families. The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection marked the International Day of Families on Friday, May 15, 2026. The ministry pledged to reduce social inequalities across the nation.
This year’s celebration focused on "Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing." The theme stressed the important role of families in national progress. It highlighted the urgent need to tackle inequalities affecting children. The ministry noted families are the main source of care for children. However, economic and social pressures are straining many households. These challenges threaten the future of children both in Ghana and Africa.
Poverty, joblessness, domestic violence, and human trafficking are major worries. Poor access to good healthcare and education worsens these problems. This is especially true for families in poorer areas. These pressures make it harder for families to provide a safe and loving environment. Strong families are key to a stable society. Every child deserves a safe place to grow. The government continues to support social protection programs. These aim to strengthen families and improve children's lives. The LEAP Programme offers financial aid. The School Feeding Programme improves child nutrition. A National Parenting Strategy encourages responsible caregiving.
Ghana has introduced several policies. These include the Child and Family Welfare Policy and the Justice for Children Policy. The National Child Policy and the Early Childhood Care and Development Policy are also active. The ministry is boosting efforts against gender-based violence. It is also improving disability inclusion. Community child protection systems are being strengthened. Digital and social welfare services will expand. This ensures vulnerable children receive support. The ministry urged all parts of society to help build strong families. This includes parents and community leaders. Civil society groups and partners must also collaborate. Working together will promote child safety and family wellbeing.
The call is for renewed collective effort. This aims to create inclusive communities. Every child must have a chance to succeed. The ministry stated, "Together, let us renew our commitment to building stronger homes and a society in which no one is left behind." This message underscores a national dedication to holistic family support and child welfare.
