Ghana has made hand-washing stations mandatory at all mass gatherings. This new rule aims to boost the nation's readiness against potential Ebola infections. Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh announced the directive.
The decision followed a thorough inspection of national health response centres. These included the Accra International Airport's Port Health Unit, Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, and the Ga East Infectious Disease Centre. Minister Akandoh stressed the need for vigilance, even without confirmed Ebola cases in Ghana. He said, "From today, there should be no mass gathering without a hand-washing station."
This policy fits into Ghana's ongoing efforts to manage public health emergencies. The country has faced challenges with disease outbreaks in the past. Strong surveillance systems and rapid response are crucial for national security. The World Health Organization (WHO) has noted Ghana's surveillance and laboratory systems are strong.
Minister Akandoh stated that Ghana must remain proactive in its health defence. Prof. Dorothy Yeboah-Manu, Director of Noguchi Memorial Institute, assured preparedness. She confirmed the institute has the necessary expertise, equipment, and reagents for testing. WHO Country Representative Dr. Fiona Braka encouraged continued public vigilance.
The Ministry of Health plans to enhance screening at entry points. This includes deploying advanced temperature scanners at the Accra International Airport. They will also improve passenger flow systems for better traveller screening. Health personnel will receive more Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). All travellers must follow health screening rules strictly.
The Ga East Infectious Disease Centre is ready to handle outbreaks. It will use its experience from past health emergencies. Minister Akandoh urged the public to practice good hygiene. This includes regular hand washing and avoiding handshakes. Reporting symptoms like fever, vomiting, or bleeding promptly is essential. "There is no cause for panic, but we must all play our part," the Minister emphasized.
