The government has launched a new strategy to fight highway robberies. Armoured buses are now operating on major roads. These buses are made to look like regular public transport. Companies like VIP, STC, and OA usually operate these services. The goal is to catch robbers who target travellers.

Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak announced the operation. He stated this during a town hall meeting in Damongo. The meeting took place on Saturday, May 23, 2026. The minister explained the buses are rebranded often. This prevents criminals from identifying them. They might be branded as STC one day. The next day, they could be VIP or OA coaches. This helps catch the criminals in action.

The operation has already seen success. Several suspected highway robbers have been arrested. The Inspector General of Police and his team are credited. This strategy is part of broader efforts to improve national security. Highway robbery is a significant concern for many Ghanaians. It affects trade and personal safety. Recent crime data often highlights road ambushes.

Roads Minister Governs Kwame Agbodza also spoke. He linked poor road conditions to increased robbery. Criminals can use bad roads to their advantage. He mentioned delays in road projects. These are part of the government's 'Big Push' programme. Contractors on the Wa to Wiawso road are performing poorly. They have been urged to return to their sites. Improving infrastructure can indirectly reduce crime.

The town hall in Damongo focused on regional issues. The Savannah Regional House of Chiefs raised concerns. These included water supply problems. They also highlighted poor road conditions. A regional hospital project is delayed. Chiefs requested more districts and a university. They also asked for more Gonja language teachers. President Mahama addressed these points.

President Mahama said preparatory work for the Damongo water project is done. This project will supply water to Damongo and surrounding areas. It is now in the procurement stage. Plans are underway for a science and technology university. China has provided a US$30 million grant. Another US$100 million funding request is with the Arab Bank for Economic Development. A 300-bed regional referral hospital is planned for the Savannah Region. It will have advanced medical equipment.
