Government proposes 35-year presidential age minimum

Ghana's government has formally proposed reducing the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 35 years, rejecting a committee's recommendation for 30 years.

The Ghanaian government has formally proposed reducing the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 years to 35 years. This decision rejects the Constitutional Review Committee's (CRC) recommendation of 30 years. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, announced this position on Thursday, July 30, 2026. Dr. Ayine stated the government's stance during a press conference at the Presidency. This followed the CRC's presentation of its final report to President John Dramani Mahama. The government believes 35 years provides a more suitable age for presidential eligibility than the 30 years suggested by the committee. This proposal forms part of a wider effort to amend Ghana's 1992 Constitution. The CRC, chaired by Professor H. Kwasi Prempeh, submitted its comprehensive report earlier that day. The report outlines various reforms concerning governance structures, the powers of state institutions, and the tenure of elected office holders. Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine explained the government's rationale. He noted that while the committee recommended 30 years, the government accepted the principle of reduction with a modification. "The minimum age will be 35 years, not 30 years," he affirmed. This indicates a careful consideration of leadership experience versus broader inclusivity. This constitutional amendment could significantly alter the political landscape. It might open doors for a younger generation of leaders to contest the presidency. The change reflects an ongoing national dialogue about modernizing governance and ensuring relevant leadership criteria. It also highlights the government's prerogative to refine committee recommendations. The proposed age reduction could influence future electoral dynamics. It may encourage more individuals in their mid-thirties to consider presidential bids. This could lead to a more diverse pool of candidates in upcoming elections. Political parties will likely adapt their strategies to this new eligibility criterion. Ghana's political system has historically favored more experienced, older leaders. A reduction to 35 years signals a potential shift towards embracing younger leadership. This move aligns with broader trends in some democracies to lower the age of political participation. It aims to better reflect the demographics of the population. This development will be closely watched by political analysts and the public. The final approval of this constitutional amendment will require parliamentary processes. It will also involve public discourse on the implications of such a change. The government's position underscores its commitment to constitutional reform. The CRC's work and the government's response are crucial for Ghana's democratic evolution. They ensure the constitution remains a living document, adaptable to contemporary needs. The debate around age limits for high office reflects a balance between experience and fresh perspectives. This decision will shape Ghana's political future for decades to come.
