Dr John Osae-Kwapong, the Director of CDD-Ghana's Democracy Project, has issued a strong call to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership. He urges them to create clear guidelines. These guidelines should manage growing political ambitions and internal tensions within the party. Dr Osae-Kwapong believes these measures are vital. They will help ensure the Mahama administration remains focused on governing.
He referenced advice from former President John Kufuor. Mr Kufuor suggested appointees with presidential aims should step aside. This was after the 2020 elections. He believed this would prevent distractions from governance. "The leadership of the party will have to come up with certain guidelines — I do not want to call them rules — that can shape and guide behaviour," Dr Osae-Kwapong stated. He stressed the need to remind party members of their primary duty. They are governing and are only in their second year. "We need to be circumspect in balancing our obligation to govern, which is why we were elected, with individual political ambitions beyond President Mahama’s tenure," he added.
This situation occurs within Ghana's ongoing economic recovery efforts. The government faces the challenge of balancing immediate developmental needs with long-term political aspirations. High-level political jostling can create uncertainty. This uncertainty often discourages foreign investment. It can also slow down the implementation of critical economic policies. The NDC's ability to project a united front is crucial for investor confidence.
Dr Osae-Kwapong highlighted the complexity. It increases when individuals with presidential ambitions also hold leadership roles. These positions involve enforcing party discipline. Setting guidelines becomes difficult. He warned that visible divisions could become worrying. This is especially true if tensions between figures like the party chairman and the presidency are not managed. "If you don’t govern well because of internal competition, then what becomes of the administration?" he questioned.
The implications extend beyond party politics. They touch upon economic stability and public trust. Visible internal conflict can erode public confidence. This can lead to reduced investor appetite for Ghanaian assets. For decision-makers, this means prioritizing governance over individual political pursuits. Markets will closely watch how the NDC navigates these internal dynamics. Consistency in policy execution is paramount for economic growth.
