The New Patriotic Party’s USA Branch (NPP-USA) will hold its 2026 internal elections using its current Branch Bylaws. This decision postpones the adoption of the national party’s revised election guidelines. The branch will review the national rules at its annual conference in July.

This decision follows a vote by the Branch Executive Committee (BEC) on May 27. Members voted 20 to 9 in favour of sticking to the existing NPP-USA Bylaws. This means the 2026 elections will follow rules last amended on March 7, 2021. The branch aims to maintain party harmony in its approach to national leadership.

The NPP-USA branch cited four main conflicts with the national guidelines. These guidelines were issued by NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong on April 8, 2026. He directed all external branches to align with new national rules. The branch felt these rules clashed with its established practices.

One key difference is candidate eligibility. NPP-USA bylaws require four years of good standing. The national guidelines ask for two years of being “known and active.” Similarly, voter eligibility differs. NPP-USA requires one year of good standing. National rules require two years of being “known and active.”

The method of voting also presents a conflict. NPP-USA bylaws mandate electronic voting before the delegates conference. National guidelines allow for in-person or official electronic voting. The composition of the Elections Committee also differs. NPP-USA prefers a five-member committee. The national framework proposes a three-member body. These differences highlight a tension between the autonomy of external branches and central party directives. Adherence to distinct constitutional frameworks can impact governance and the fairness of electoral processes within diaspora branches.

Branch members discussed various options for moving forward. Some argued the branch bylaws are supreme. Others emphasized respecting national authority. A compromise was reached: existing bylaws remain the framework if not formally amended. The branch is open to harmonization. However, this must follow constitutional procedures. This includes prior notice to chapters and delegate approval.

The NPP-USA Annual Branch Conference, scheduled for July 24 to 26 in Massachusetts, will be a key forum. Delegates will discuss potential amendments to the branch constitution. This meeting is expected to address the outstanding issues with the national election guidelines. The outcome could set a precedent for other external branches navigating similar situations. Strong internal governance of diaspora branches is crucial for party cohesion and representation abroad.
