The Tema Regional Police Command is investigating the alleged murder of a couple. Ebenezer Kwabena Obiri, 47, and his wife Mary Anim, 35, were found dead in their Saki apartment. The incident occurred on Friday, May 1, 2026. The couple had five children together.
The victims were discovered in separate locations within their home. Both sustained severe cutlass wounds. Signs of a struggle were evident at the scene. Their three-year-old child, who was present during the incident, is traumatised. This child survived the attack unharmed.
This event has cast a shadow over the community in the Kpone Electoral Area of the Greater Accra Region. Mr Isaac Newton, the Assembly Member for Nmlitsakpo Electoral Area, reported receiving a distress call on May 1. Co-tenants last saw the couple on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at their residence in Immigration House. The precise timing of the deaths is still under investigation.
A key piece of information comes from Mr Isaac Darko, a relative of the deceased. He stated that on April 29, Mr Obiri called him and then handed the phone to a man named Prince. Prince was described as a friend and a former soldier. Prince claimed he was transferred to Tamale and would depart on Friday. However, it was later discovered that Prince had been dismissed from the military.
Further details emerged from Mr Iddrisu, a business partner of Mr Obiri. Mr Iddrisu revealed that Mr Obiri kept GHS 100,000.00 in cash within the apartment. This money was intended for a business transaction. Mr Darko suspects Prince orchestrated the murders to steal this substantial amount.
Mr Darko believes Prince may have spent the night with the couple and their child. The child’s description of the perpetrator reportedly matches Prince. "We are very devastated by this tragedy," Mr Darko told the Ghana News Agency. "Kobby was such a great human being and we can’t understand why anyone would want to harm him, let alone kill him."
The police are appealing for public assistance. Anyone with information leading to Prince’s arrest is urged to come forward. This will help bring justice to the bereaved families. The investigation by the Tema Regional Police Command is active and ongoing. The bodies of Mr Obiri and Ms Anim have been sent to the Police Hospital morgue. Their deaths highlight the risks associated with carrying large sums of cash.
This incident underscores the challenges of personal security and finances in some communities. The involvement of a former military man raises questions about his motives and access to weapons. The discovery of such a large sum of money in a residential setting also points to underlying financial practices that may attract criminal attention. The economic impact, while not direct on national markets, affects local livelihoods and could deter investment if such crimes become more frequent.
