Rivalry Expected to Intensify Within NDC

Bawumia Campaign Director Predicts Fiercest Internal Contest for Opposition Party

Dennis Miracles Aboagye, who leads communications for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, believes the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will face its sternest internal leadership battle. This prediction stems from the emergence of succession politics within the opposition party. The NDC is entering unfamiliar territory as it prepares for a future beyond President John Dramani Mahama.

Mr. Aboagye explained that political parties often experience such transitions. The NDC has historically united around prominent leaders. Past leaders like Jerry John Rawlings, John Evans Atta Mills, and John Dramani Mahama provided strong central figures. Even significant disagreements, such as those involving Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, did not severely destabilize the party due to this recognised leadership.

However, the current political climate is different. President Mahama is widely expected to complete his final term in office. When a president is not seeking re-election, they often become less influential in party affairs. The NDC must now confront this political reality and prepare for significant internal competition. Mr. Aboagye stated that accepting this natural evolution of internal competition is crucial.

He warned that failure to do so could result in the most intense internal contest in the NDC’s history. Mr. Aboagye also pointed to early indications of this rivalry. Party members are already engaging in public disagreements. The real contest has not even begun, he noted.

Mr. Aboagye dismissed any sympathy for the NDC’s internal challenges. He stated that the NDC has become a problem for the country. He still acknowledged that such internal competition is a normal part of democratic politics. The NDC will need to prepare for these upcoming struggles.

Regarding the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) prospects, Mr. Aboagye believes their electoral success hinges on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision. It will not depend on the NDC’s internal fortunes. The NPP’s strategy will focus on presenting its own ideas to the Ghanaian people.
