Former US President Donald Trump has publicly declared that removing FIFA President Gianni Infantino would be a "terrible mistake." This strong endorsement comes amid significant pressure on Infantino regarding his proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative. The FFE proposal aimed to create a new company to manage the commercial and ticketing rights for all FIFA competitions, including the World Cup. Under this plan, 21% of these rights would have been sold to a private investment company, sparking considerable controversy within the global football community. This development fits into a broader narrative of increasing commercialization in international sports and the political influence that often accompanies such ventures. The FFE plan, first revealed on July 28, has drawn criticism from major football confederations like UEFA, Concacaf, and the Asian Football Confederation, who accused Infantino of breaking trust through deception. Trump's backing marks his first public defense of Infantino since the FFE plans became known. He stated on social media, "Fifa would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, they even considered replacing president Gianni Infantino." Trump praised Infantino for presiding over the "most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented." The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, concluded recently with Spain winning the title. Trump's comments underscore the significant financial stakes involved in FIFA's commercial decisions and the potential impact on future tournaments. The proposed investor group for FFE was expected to be led by Thrive Eternal, an American venture capital firm co-founded by Joshua Kushner, who is the brother of Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. The implications of this ongoing saga are substantial for the future governance and financial structure of global football. The controversy highlights the tension between traditional football bodies and new commercial models. Decision-makers within FIFA and its confederations will need to navigate these complex financial and political pressures carefully. The outcome will likely influence future World Cup hosting bids and the distribution of football's vast revenues.
