Several musical artists have cancelled their participation in the US Freedom 250 festival. Former President Donald Trump responded by calling for the entire event to be cancelled. The festival marks the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The artist withdrawals stem from concerns about the event's connection to the White House. Martina McBride, The Commodores, Young MC, and Bret Michaels are among those who dropped out. This has led to only a few acts remaining from the original nine announced performers. Trump described the departing artists as "overpriced" and "boring" on his social media platform, Truth Social.

The US Freedom 250 festival is part of a broader initiative for America's 250th anniversary. The Trump administration launched the Great American State Fair this past year. It launched Freedom 250 to organize a grand celebration. This initiative aims for a celebration worthy of a momentous occasion. Congress established America250 a decade ago. America250 oversees anniversary commemoration events. These include official July 4th celebrations. It also supports block parties nationwide.

Danielle Alvarez, a spokeswoman for Freedom 250, stated that President Trump would headline the fair's opening ceremony. She mentioned he was excited to kick off the historic celebration. This was planned for June 24. Trump had previously signed an executive order. This order established a task force for the anniversary celebration. Freedom 250 was created to fulfill this mission. The White House site details this ambitious goal. The artists were announced on Wednesday for the festival. Performers were scheduled between June 25 and July 10. The National Mall in Washington D.C. is the venue.

Country singer Martina McBride was slated for the first night. Poison frontman Bret Michaels was scheduled for July 3. Both artists have since cancelled their performances. Young MC, known for his 1989 hit "Bust a Move," stated artists were unaware of political involvement. He expressed interest in future non-political events in D.C. Martina McBride clarified her initial understanding of the event. She believed it was non-partisan but found this misleading. Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli confirmed his participation. However, the original voices behind Milli Vanilli's music will not perform.

Trump suggested replacing the festival with a "Make America Great Again rally." He expressed a desire for a large rally instead of "overpriced singers." He claimed to be the "Number One Attraction anywhere in the World." He stated he gets much larger audiences than Elvis Presley. The White House supports several Freedom 250 events. These include a UFC fight and a Grand Prix race. Commemorative passports featuring Trump's portrait will also be released.
