The Wontumi Campaign has sharply criticized a Presidential Staffer for remarks suggesting that individuals with ongoing court cases are unfit for political leadership. Rosemond Obeng, a Presidential Staffer, reportedly stated that "no serious political party would allow someone with active court cases to contest for chairmanship." The Wontumi Campaign described these comments as lacking experience and understanding. They highlighted that history proves legal challenges do not disqualify leaders. Ghana's first President, Kwame Nkrumah, was jailed in 1950. While imprisoned, his party won the 1951 elections. This led to his release and significant political roles. Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings also faced a court-martial and imprisonment in May 1979. He later became Head of State and President. Even current government figures have faced legal scrutiny. Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson was acquitted in an ambulance case in July 2024. NDC General Secretary Fiifi Kwetey has also faced past political challenges. International examples further support this view. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison before becoming South Africa's President. Former US President Donald Trump remained influential despite numerous indictments in 2023 and 2024. Biblical figures like Joseph and David faced imprisonment and persecution before assuming leadership roles. The campaign stated, "History, politics, and Scripture all confirm one undeniable truth: trials do not destroy great leaders; they often prepare them for greater responsibilities." The Wontumi Campaign believes Chairman Wontumi's legal issues demonstrate the political resistance he faces. They see it as proof of his resilience. Leadership, they argue, is built on sacrifice and courage. Chairman Wontumi is focused on preparing the NPP for the 2028 elections. He also supports Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's presidential bid. The campaign criticized Ms. Obeng for comments made without deep examination. They believe political history is shaped by those who endure adversity.
