The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) has accused the Ghana Police Service of extrajudicial killings in the Upper East Region. The group calls the situation a "national disgrace." This follows a press conference held on Tuesday, May 6. MAYA is demanding an independent commission of enquiry.

The association alleges a worrying pattern of abuse and cover-ups. These alleged incidents are particularly noted in Bawku and its surrounding areas. MAYA president stated the association represents "voices for justice, human dignity, and the sanctity of life." These comments were made on behalf of the association.

MAYA highlighted a previous case from March 2026. This involved the death of Abdul-Aziz Iddrisu, aged 33. He was also known as Baaluuse. His death occurred while he was in police custody. The Ghana Police Service linked his arrest to a December 2025 attack. A police officer was killed in that attack near Karimenga barrier. MAYA states the circumstances of Iddrisu's death remain unclear. They believe it may not be an isolated incident.

MAYA also raised serious concerns about a recent police operation. This took place in Zuarungu on April 30, 2026. The group claims officers arrested ten individuals initially. Witnesses reported seeing all ten suspects alive. They visited them at the Zuarungu Police Station. Witnesses said the detainees were in good condition.

However, the police later reported a different account. They stated only four suspects were arrested. They also claimed two others died from gunshot wounds. The police described this as an intelligence-led operation. It targeted a robbery gang. MAYA disputes the police narrative entirely. "The family find this account inconsistent and misleading," the association stated. "It is an attempt to cover up wrongdoing and the murder they committed."

The association further alleged inconsistencies in police statements. The initial arrest date was reportedly given as April 29, 2026. This date was later changed to April 30. Additional details about alleged robbery activities appeared later. "The police statement was edited multiple times, with key details altered across versions, raising questions about its reliability," MAYA asserted. They questioned when the deceased sustained alleged gunshot injuries. They also questioned why the suspects were reportedly uninjured in custody but later declared dead.

MAYA questioned who authorized the movement of suspects. They also asked why there was no documented explanation for the alleged injuries. The association further accused some security personnel. They alleged these personnel exploit tensions in Bawku. Certain officers may act as "conflict entrepreneurs." This means they profit from their roles. They benefit from operational activities and state resources.

The association firmly stated the police have no constitutional authority to take life. "The police do not have the authority under the Constitution or any law to take the life of a Ghanaian citizen through extrajudicial means," MAYA declared. They urged President John Dramani Mahama to establish an independent commission of enquiry. MAYA stated its readiness to provide evidence. They also called for full transparency from the Ghana Police Service. Accountability for all officers involved is demanded. This includes officers of all ranks.

The events raise critical questions about police conduct and accountability in Ghana. The use of force and adherence to due process are paramount. MAYA’s allegations, if proven, could have significant implications for public trust. They could also affect future policing strategies. This situation demands thorough and impartial investigation.
