Ghana has introduced a new nationwide electronic visa (e-visa) system. This fully automated platform went live on Monday, May 25, 2026. It completely replaces old paper-based visa applications. The system ends the traditional visa-on-arrival for African travelers. This major change in immigration was led by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS). It was done in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The goal is to make Ghana a central hub for Pan-Africanism. President John Dramani Mahama launched the initiative. He demonstrated the technology at a ceremony in Accra. He personally approved the first electronic travel authorization. The new system changes how foreigners complete travel documents. All African passport holders needing a visa must use the digital portal. This must be done before their trip to Ghana. In a significant Pan-African policy, African applicants using the e-visa will pay no visa fees. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated this. Travellers from ECOWAS member states are unaffected. Citizens from countries with existing visa waiver agreements also remain unaffected. They can continue to enter Ghana without a visa. The Ghana Immigration Service has created a five-step process. Applicants must follow these steps for travel clearance. First, prospects log onto the official portal. They fill out digital visa application forms. This automated platform allows input via computers or phones. Second, applicants upload necessary documents. Required documents include a valid passport with six months validity. A clear scan of the passport biodata page is needed. A confirmed travel itinerary is also required. Proof of local accommodation is necessary. Official invitation letters are needed if applicable. Third, applications undergo security vetting. The system links to Ghana’s Advanced Passenger Information (API) system. It also connects to Passenger Name Record (PNR) systems. International crime watchlists are also integrated. President Mahama stated that technology will not weaken national safety. He said, “Every entry into the Republic will remain subject to stringent security screening and established immigration protocols.” Fourth, fees are paid digitally. African passport holders have zero-fee processing. Travelers from outside Africa pay applicable visa tariffs. These fees must be paid through secure online gateways. This is before the application goes for final review. Fifth, the electronic visa is delivered. If approved, the travel authorization is sent digitally. Applicants receive an email with an electronic document. This document can be printed or shown on a smart device. It can be presented at any airport or land border crossing. Authorities plan to expand the digital system. It will automate work permit applications. The Ministry for the Interior, GIS, and the GIPC will expand its features. This will include expatriate work permits. It will also cover long-term residence permits. This is expected to improve regulatory compliance. It will also boost the ease of doing business in Ghana. Major upgrades are also happening at Accra International Airport (KIA). Advanced 3D baggage scanners are being installed. These scanners will be in Terminals 2 and 3. They should reduce the need to remove laptops from hand luggage. More screening equipment will arrive by August 2026. This will eliminate the need to remove shoes and belts at security checks. The e-visa rollout is seen as vital. It modernizes border management. It aims to boost eco-tourism. It will attract foreign direct investment. It champions the African Union’s Free Movement Protocol. This overhaul represents a significant step in Ghana’s digital transformation efforts. It is also a key part of its continental integration agenda.
