Ghanaian mobile money transactions have reached an astonishing GHS493.2 billion in April 2026. This represents a massive increase from the GHS155 billion recorded annually before 2018.

This dramatic growth is largely thanks to the introduction of mobile money interoperability. This system allows different mobile money providers to send money to each other. It also connects mobile money accounts with traditional bank accounts. Before May 2018, these transfers were not possible directly.

The launch of mobile money interoperability in May 2018 was a significant event for Ghana's economy. It transformed a fragmented payment system into a connected digital network. This innovation helped make Ghana a leader in financial inclusion across Africa. The country now boasts a 94% financial inclusion rate. This compares to earlier figures before the interoperability system.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, then Vice President, launched Ghana's Mobile Money Interoperability system. The system was designed to make financial transactions easier and more efficient. Initial results were promising. In its first five days, the system handled 23,000 transactions worth GHS1.8 million. By November 2018, when the second phase connected mobile money with bank accounts, over 1.3 million transactions worth GHS134 million had occurred.

The total value of mobile money transactions in 2018 reached GHS223 billion. This was a 43% jump from the GHS155 billion in 2017. The growth continued year after year. In 2019, the value rose by 54% to GHS344 billion. By 2020, it grew by 65% to GHS569 billion. Transactions surpassed GHS1 trillion for the first time in 2022. This upward trend continued, with a 79% leap to GHS1.92 trillion in 2023. In 2024, transactions increased by 57% to GHS3.01 trillion, and GHS4.5 trillion in 2025.

Ghana now has approximately 83 million registered mobile money accounts. This is a significant increase from the 23.9 million accounts in 2017. The current monthly transaction value alone is GHS493.2 billion. This figure is higher than the total annual transactions recorded before the interoperability system was in place.

This financial transformation positions Ghana as a major player in mobile money transactions not just in West Africa, but across the continent. The expanded access and ease of use have empowered millions of Ghanaians. They can now participate more fully in the digital economy.

The continued expansion of mobile money interoperability is expected to further boost economic growth. It enhances financial inclusion. It also lowers transaction costs for businesses and individuals. Policymakers will likely monitor this trend closely. It has implications for monetary policy and financial sector development.
