Ghanaian University Students Embrace AI for Academic Tasks

    Ghanaian university students are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence (AI) tools for their academic work. This widespread adoption helps them manage demanding coursework and employment responsibilities. Students use AI to draft essays, create presentations, summarise complex readings, and even write computer code.

    This shift is particularly evident among students at the University of Media, Arts and Communication’s Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ). Michael, a UniMAC-IJ student, began using AI in Level 200 and found it crucial in Level 300. He stated AI made research easier while he balanced lectures with work. Melson, another UniMAC-IJ student, described AI as almost indispensable, making university work very easy.

    The integration of AI into academic life reflects a broader trend in Ghana's educational landscape. As technology advances, universities must adapt their teaching and assessment methods. This situation highlights the need for a national strategy on AI integration in education. It also underscores the importance of digital literacy for both students and educators.

    Linford Ofori Aborchie, an AI consultant and founder of Zero to Visible, advises caution regarding AI detection software. He believes universities should not make disciplinary decisions based solely on these reports. Ofori Aborchie suggests combining technology with human judgment. He recommends oral defenses, draft submissions, and observing students' writing styles over time. These methods offer a more comprehensive understanding of student learning than detection tools alone.

    The reliance on AI has sparked debate among students themselves. Melson admitted that heavy AI use affected his writing ability. He found it challenging to write a letter to a lecturer without AI, realising he was not as proficient as before. Michael, however, views AI as an aid to learning, not a cause of laziness. He noted that his school penalises assignments where most of the work comes from AI.

    This divergence of opinions reflects a larger question: Does AI replace student thinking or merely change learning methods? Ofori Aborchie believes the outcome depends on how students use the technology. He cited an example where AI helped a student analyse course material and identify relevant sections for exam questions. This approach guided the student back to original content for study, demonstrating responsible AI use.

    Ofori Aborchie defines academic misconduct in AI use by three factors: transparency, originality, and learning. Misconduct occurs when AI replaces a student's intellectual contribution. It also happens when AI is used to deceive instructors about the work's true author. This distinction is crucial for maintaining academic integrity.

    AI is forcing universities to rethink assessment strategies. Traditional assignments focused on information recall are now easily completed by AI. This necessitates a greater emphasis on critical thinking, practical application, and originality in student evaluations. Ofori Aborchie advocates for evolving assessments to match technological advancements. He suggests prioritising oral defenses, practical projects, and problem-solving over simple information reproduction. The future of education involves students learning to think with AI, not letting AI think for them.

    The question is no longer whether students should use AI, but how they can use it responsibly. Universities must guide students in leveraging AI as a learning tool while preserving their critical thinking skills. This balance is essential for preparing students for a future where AI is an integral part of professional life.
