Mobile money transactions in Ghana reached GHS 493.2 billion in April 2026. This significant figure involved 967 million separate transactions. The Bank of Ghana's May 2026 Summary of Economic and Financial Data confirmed these numbers.

These figures represent a clear increase from the GHS 484.6 billion recorded in March 2026. This upward trend highlights the continuous expansion and adoption within the country’s digital payments system. The rise in transactions shows more people are using mobile phones for their financial activities.

This growth in mobile money is central to Ghana's broader economic strategy of digital transformation and financial inclusion. Increased digital transactions reduce reliance on physical cash, making financial services more accessible to a wider population. The vibrant mobile money sector supports various economic activities, from small businesses to larger enterprises, by providing efficient payment solutions. This trend aligns with Ghana's goal of becoming a cashless society.

The Bank of Ghana report revealed other supporting statistics reinforcing the sector's strength. Registered mobile money accounts climbed to 83 million in April 2026. This is up from 80.5 million in December 2025. Additionally, the number of active accounts stood at 26 million. Registered agents also increased to 992,000, with 534,000 agents actively serving customers. Balances on mobile money floats, which are funds held by mobile money operators, rose to GHS 36.7 billion in April from GHS 35.4 billion in March. This indicates increased money flow and trust in the system.

Alongside mobile money, other digital payment systems also recorded significant activity. Mobile money interoperability transactions, allowing transfers between different mobile money service providers, amounted to GHS 5.8 billion. This involved 31.7 million transactions during April. Cheque clearing transactions, for comparison, had a value of GHS 36.6 billion, processing 413,000 transactions. Automated Clearing House (ACH) Direct Credit transactions, for direct bank payments, reached GHS 13.5 billion with 816,000 transactions. Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) Instant Pay transactions also surged to GHS 79 billion in April 2026 from GHS 71.5 billion in March, with nearly 19.9 million individual transactions. These numbers confirm the overall move towards digital financial services.

The continued expansion of mobile money will likely influence the financial sector, market behaviour, and government policy. Decision-makers will observe these trends to guide regulations and foster further innovation in digital payments. Businesses will adapt their strategies to leverage these digital platforms for customer engagement and transactions. The robust growth indicates a positive outlook for Ghana's digital economy.
