The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has provided 16 streetlights to traders at Kantamanto Market. This donation aims to improve visibility, security, and overall trading conditions within the bustling marketplace. The AMA presented eight boxes, with each box containing two streetlights. This initiative directly addresses concerns raised by market leaders about inadequate lighting.

Nii Sakum Korley, Deputy Director of the AMA's 24-Hour Economy Office, presented the lights on behalf of the assembly. He stated that the donation is part of the AMA's commitment to addressing the traders' expressed needs. Poor lighting conditions were identified as a significant issue, particularly during early morning and evening trading hours. The initial rollout of 16 lights will allow for immediate installation. The AMA plans to secure additional lights for the market.

This effort aligns with broader governmental goals to boost economic activity, particularly through initiatives like the 24-Hour Economy. Kantamanto Market is a crucial hub for commerce in Accra, supporting thousands of jobs. Improved lighting can reduce risks of crime and accidents. This can lead to longer operating hours and increased sales for vendors. The AMA's action demonstrates a tangible response to specific business environment challenges.

Paul Oblie Laryea, Policy Advisor to the Mayor of Accra, made the presentation. Opoku Afreh, President of Kantamanto Market, received the donation. He described the gesture as historic. Mr. Afreh highlighted that this is the first time the AMA has made such a donation to the market's traders. He praised the Assembly for its responsiveness. Mr. Afreh also urged traders to cooperate with AMA officials. He stressed the importance of paying approved fees and fulfilling other obligations.

Market leaders reminded traders of their responsibilities within the market. They cautioned against resisting lawful payments. Traders were also advised to obtain receipts for all transactions. Concerns should be channelled through market leadership. This approach aims to foster a more organised and cooperative environment. The expectation is that these streetlights will strengthen the collaboration between the AMA and Kantamanto Market stakeholders. Better lighting is predicted to enhance safety and create a more conducive atmosphere for economic activities.
