President John Dramani Mahama has been commended for upgrading Ohawu Agricultural College into a campus of the University of Engineering and Agricultural Science. This significant decision aims to advance education and agricultural development particularly in the Volta Region.

Osie Adza Tekpor VII, Paramount Chief of the Avatime Traditional Area, issued a statement on April 19, 2026. He described the upgrade as a key step to expand opportunities for young people. It also strengthens Ghana’s vital agricultural sector. The transformation will provide students with crucial technical skills. These skills are needed to drive innovation and growth in farming.

This upgrade arrives at a critical time for Ghana's economy. The nation is working to revive production of important crops. These include cocoa, coffee, oil palm, and organic brown rice. Enhanced focus on agriculture through higher education can help boost output. It can also improve national food supplies and export earnings. The chief noted this initiative mirrors other infrastructure developments in the Volta Region. These include the University of Health and Allied Sciences and Ho Technical University.

The Paramount Chief emphasized the need for continued government investment. He called for the rehabilitation of roads within the Avatime area. These include routes connecting Avatime Fume to Gbadzeme and Amedzofe township roads. Improved infrastructure like these roads is essential. It will support tourism and boost local economic activities.

Osie Adza Tekpor VII encouraged qualified Ghanaians. He urged them to use the new university campus to build their careers. This move is expected to enhance their competitiveness in the job market. The statement reflects optimism that targeted investments can unlock the region’s economic potential. It also aims to create sustainable jobs for the youth.
