Member of Parliament Habib Iddrisu has launched a new agricultural mechanisation centre in the Tolon Constituency. This initiative aims to modernise farming and increase food production. The centre is named the Soyalana Agricultural Mechanisation Centre (SAMC). It will offer mechanised farming services and agribusiness opportunities. Farmers and community leaders have welcomed this investment.
For Tolon, agriculture is the primary source of income. Many farmers still rely on manual labour. This often leads to late planting and lower crop yields. Mr. Iddrisu's intervention focuses on accessibility and affordability. The project aligns with a goal of zero hunger and zero poverty. It aims to help farmers cultivate more land on time. Increased yields and reduced drudgery are key objectives. The initiative also seeks to inspire new agribusiness entrepreneurs.
To ensure efficient service, the constituency is divided into five zones. Each zone has a dedicated tractor and farming equipment. A central tractor is also available. These zones cover areas like Lungbunga/Kasulyili and Tali/Gburimani. Nyankpala/Worrebogu is another zone. The equipment includes ploughs, planters, harvesters, and sprayers. This decentralised approach shortens waiting times. It brings mechanisation services closer to farmers.
The SAMC offers more than just machinery. It integrates mechanised services with other support systems. These include radio, TV, and mobile extension services. Farmers will receive advice on climate-smart agriculture. They will learn about soil fertility and water management. Adoption of certified seeds will be encouraged. Best practices in crop management are also part of the plan.
The project will also improve connections to markets. Farmers will link with agro-dealers and seed suppliers. Buyers and aggregators will be more accessible. Contract farming arrangements will be promoted. A significant focus is on youth employment. Women's economic participation will be strengthened. Skills training in mechanisation and agribusiness will be provided. Youth-led farm enterprises will be supported. Women will benefit from greenhouse production. Agribusiness entrepreneurship opportunities will expand.
The centre uses a subsidised pricing structure. This makes services affordable for farmers. It also ensures the centre's long-term sustainability. The MP stated that agriculture must be treated as a modern business. It should be a wealth-creating activity. He noted that Tolon has land, labour, and determination. Leadership must provide the necessary systems and opportunities. This approach has earned him the nickname "Soyalana".
Observers suggest SAMC is a model for Northern Ghana. It combines mechanisation, extension, and agribusiness. It demonstrates what targeted leadership can achieve. For Tolon residents, the impact is immediate. Farmers can access services closer to home. They receive advisory support and market connections. Tractors are now preparing fields for a more productive future.
