Consolidated Bank Ghana (CBG) has launched its agency banking drive, named ‘Sika Agent’. The bank aims to onboard 8,000 agents across Ghana by the year 2028. This initiative is designed to bring banking services closer to people nationwide. The official launch took place on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at the bank’s headquarters annex in Accra.

The ‘Sika Agent’ platform allows customers to access basic banking services through approved agents. These services include instant account opening, cash deposits and withdrawals, and bill payments. CBG has already registered 168 agents. These agents are currently operating in the Greater Accra, Central, and Eastern regions. The bank plans significant expansion in the coming years. By the end of 2026, CBG expects to have 1,000 agents on board.

This initiative is part of CBG’s wider strategy to become a more accessible financial institution. It aligns with Ghana’s broader goals for financial inclusion. Many Ghanaians, especially in rural areas, face challenges accessing traditional bank branches. Agency banking offers a solution by using local businesses as service points. This can help bridge the gap in financial service delivery. The Deputy Managing Director, Sheila Azuntaba, highlighted this fact.

Dr. Naomi Wolali Kwetey, the Managing Director of CBG, stated that the initiative represents a major step forward. It aims to make banking services more convenient for customers. She emphasized CBG’s commitment to supporting individuals, businesses, and communities. This support comes through secure and reliable banking solutions. The agents themselves expressed optimism about the program. They noted that the commission rates offered are very competitive.

The ‘Sika Agent’ initiative will empower communities and support local businesses. It reflects a continuous effort to provide innovative banking solutions. The program aims to ensure that more Ghanaians can participate in the formal financial system. This widespread network of agents is expected to boost economic activity in local areas. It provides a crucial link for transactions and financial management.

CBG’s expansion into agency banking is a response to the evolving financial landscape in Ghana. The bank's leadership sees this as a vital component of its growth strategy. By leveraging local entrepreneurs as agents, CBG can extend its reach without massive investment in new physical branches. This is particularly important for a bank like CBG, which plays a key role in supporting Ghana’s economic restructuring. The target of 8,000 agents by 2028 signals a strong ambition to dominate this market segment.

The success of ‘Sika Agent’ will depend on several factors. These include effective agent training, robust technology infrastructure, and strong marketing efforts. CBG must ensure that the agents are well-equipped to handle increased transaction volumes and customer queries. The agents’ reports of high commission rates suggest a strong incentive structure. This should encourage widespread adoption and active participation from the agent network. The bank also needs to monitor customer satisfaction closely as the network grows.
