Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GhIPSS) is leading efforts to integrate payment systems across Africa, aiming to expand cross-border financial connections. GhIPSS CEO Clara B. Arthur stated at the 3i Africa Summit 2026 that Africa's next phase of financial growth relies on stronger links between national payment systems. This initiative positions Ghana as a key hub for digital financial integration on the continent.

The primary goal is to support trade and economic growth by allowing Ghana's instant payment system to connect with those in other African nations. This expansion will make digital transactions faster, more affordable, and easier for users. Such interoperability is crucial for modernising financial services and broadening access for individuals and businesses across borders.

This move aligns with Ghana's ongoing efforts to build an inclusive and seamless payments ecosystem, supported by strong regulatory frameworks from the Bank of Ghana. The Bank has enabled GhIPSS to introduce vital interoperable services like mobile money transfers and instant payments. These domestic successes provide a robust foundation for regional expansion, showcasing Ghana's leadership in digital finance.

GhIPSS CEO Clara B. Arthur stated, "The future of digital finance lies in cross-border interoperability." She highlighted the growing expectation among users, such as traders at Makola Market, to receive mobile money regardless of the sender's platform. This reflects the deep trust and efficiency already built into Ghana's digital payment infrastructure.

Looking ahead, GhIPSS is upgrading its infrastructure by migrating to the ISO 20022 global messaging standard. This upgrade will improve transaction data quality, speed up processing times, and align Ghana's payment systems with international standards. This strategic repositioning aims to make Ghana's payment ecosystem more competitive and globally connected, attracting more foreign investment and facilitating international trade. GhIPSS also plans to collaborate with virtual asset service providers under new legislation, signalling a cautious yet progressive approach to digital assets. This step could broaden the scope of financial services available within Ghana and across its integrated network.

The broader aim of Ghana's digital finance agenda is to significantly expand financial inclusion and economic participation. GhIPSS remains committed to providing the essential infrastructure to support innovation and widen access to financial services. Stronger collaboration among fintech companies, banks, and other financial institutions is crucial to achieving these goals, moving beyond mere systems to deliver real impact on people's lives.
