President of Groupe Ndoum, Dr Kweku Ndoum, has declared that the company and the Ndoum family experienced shock from the revocation of GN Savings and Loans' operating licence. He insists the financial institution had satisfied all regulatory conditions at the time of the action.
The legal representative for GN Savings and Loans had previously stated the Bank of Ghana revoked the licence solely due to insolvency. Dr Ndoum, son of prominent businessman Papa Kwesi Ndoum, made these remarks while speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile programme. He asserted that the group's banking division was financially sound before regulatory measures were implemented.
He explained that GN Bank, initially demoted to a savings-and-loan company, was financially stable. This downgrade significantly impacted the institution's performance, he stated. The company subsequently adhered to all conditions set during the transition period. Therefore, the licence revocation came as a surprise, he noted.
Dr Ndoum clarified that the Bank of Ghana advised the reclassification to a loan and savings institution. Group Ndoum diligently met all required obligations. They made considerable progress in the eight months between the reclassification and the verification process. He expressed that the licence revocation caused them considerable surprise.
These declarations follow a recent Court of Appeal judgment favouring Groupe Ndoum. The group had been engaged in a seven-year legal dispute with the Bank of Ghana and the High Court. The ruling has brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding the revocation.
The Ghanaian banking sector has faced significant turmoil in recent years. Several financial institutions have had their licenses revoked due to various regulatory breaches and liquidity issues. The Bank of Ghana has undertaken extensive reforms to strengthen the financial system. These actions aim to protect depositors and ensure financial stability. The GN Savings case highlights the complexities of regulatory enforcement.
The financial implications of such revocations are substantial. They affect depositors, employees, and the broader economic landscape. For Groupe Ndoum, the legal victory offers a potential pathway for continued operations or restructuring. The future of GN Savings and Loans remains a point of interest for market observers and financial analysts.
