Zenith Bank Ghana has donated GHS 150,000 to the Childhood Cancer Unit at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital. This significant contribution supports children undergoing cancer treatment at the facility.
The donation was channelled through Cure Childhood Cancer Ghana, a non-governmental organisation. It aims to ease the financial burden on affected families and improve health outcomes for young patients. This initiative marks Zenith Bank's continued commitment to healthcare support, especially for vulnerable groups.
This action aligns with a broader trend of corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives by financial institutions in Ghana. Many banks allocate funds to critical social sectors like health and education. Zenith Bank previously supported the Paediatric Oncology Unit of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in 2023, demonstrating a consistent focus on childhood cancer care. Such corporate involvement complements government efforts in public health funding.
Henry Onwuzurigbo, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Ghana, explained the bank's decision. He stated that supporting childhood cancer care is consistent with their approach to Corporate Social Responsibility. Mr. Onwuzurigbo emphasised the bank's commitment to giving back to communities as it celebrates 21 years of operations in Ghana. He highlighted healthcare as a key area for their CSR efforts.
Dr. Nihad Salifu, Director of Cure Childhood Cancer Ghana, underscored the importance of such investments. She noted that childhood cancer is curable with early and appropriate treatment. Dr. Salifu stressed that timely diagnosis and the right care allow children to live normal, productive lives. She thanked Zenith Bank for their crucial support.
Dr. Leslie Issa Adam Zakaria, Medical Director of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, also expressed gratitude. He assured that the GHS 150,000 donation would be used effectively to provide necessary resources and care for the children. This support helps address the considerable financial pressure families face due to long-term treatment costs.
Zenith Bank's healthcare interventions extend beyond cancer care. The bank has supported life-saving surgeries for children with heart and eye conditions. They also provide free medical outreaches in deprived areas. The bank's Happy Soles Project supplied health-protective footwear to 1,000 children. These activities reflect a comprehensive approach to improving community health and wellbeing.
As Zenith Bank Ghana celebrates its 21st anniversary, themed “21 Years of Excellence, A Future of Possibilities,” these donations reinforce its community engagement. The bank's sustained support for healthcare initiatives sets a precedent for other corporate entities. This ongoing commitment is vital for strengthening Ghana's healthcare infrastructure and supporting its most vulnerable citizens.
