Cracker Barrel’s chief executive, Julie Masino, has resigned, effective in August, following widespread criticism over a controversial rebrand. The restaurant chain announced on Monday that David Deno, formerly of Bloomin' Brands, will assume the leadership role. This change comes after a turbulent period for the company, which operates nearly 660 country-themed stores and restaurants across 44 US states. The rebrand, which aimed to simplify the classic logo and modernize store interiors, sparked fierce resistance from loyal diners. Critics, including former President Trump, argued the changes stripped away the brand's nostalgic Southern charm. She suggested that while doubling down on conservative values might win back loyalists, it could also limit future growth. Pozner stated that altering the menu, decor, or branding at this point is risky, leaving few options to attract new customers. Cracker Barrel has also faced significant financial challenges beyond public scrutiny. The Tennessee-based chain has seen falling sales and slowing customer traffic, all while grappling with soaring operational costs. This transition occurs as Cracker Barrel competes intensely with rivals like Denny's and IHOP, which are vying for market share among budget-conscious diners seeking classic American comfort food. Masino will receive an estimated $4.6 million as part of her departure package, according to the company's 8-K filing. She will remain with the company until October to assist Deno with the leadership transition. Deno, in his statement, acknowledged Cracker Barrel's "deep connection with guests across generations," signaling a potential shift back towards core brand values.
