Zijin Golden Ridge Limited (ZGRL), operator of the Akyem Gold Mine, generated over GHS 7 billion in direct economic value for Ghana in 2025. This significant contribution included GHS 1.41 billion paid in taxes and royalties to the state. The company also spent GHS 4.19 billion with Ghanaian suppliers and service providers.
ZGRL reaffirmed its commitment to Ghana’s economic growth and investment agenda. The company announced its partnership with the Ghana Investment Promotion Authority (GIPA) for two major events. These are the 2026 Invest Ghana Summit (IGS 2026) and the 22nd Ghana Club 100 Awards. This partnership highlights ZGRL's confidence in Ghana's investment potential and its dedication to creating long-term value.
This commitment comes as Ghana actively seeks foreign direct investment to bolster its economy. The government aims to diversify revenue streams and create jobs. ZGRL's substantial economic contribution aligns with national development goals. It also supports the broader strategy of attracting responsible investors. Ghana's mining sector remains a crucial pillar of its economy, contributing significantly to GDP and export earnings. The sector faces ongoing scrutiny regarding local content and environmental standards.
Mr. Jason Zhang, ZGRL Vice President for Sustainability and External Relations, spoke at the launch event in Accra. He stated, “Ghana continues to demonstrate the qualities investors look for – stability, opportunity and a clear vision for growth.” Mr. Zhang emphasized that ZGRL's participation in the summit shows its confidence in Ghana as a competitive investment destination. He added that the company's experience at Akyem proves responsible investment can create jobs and generate government revenue.
The partnership with GIPA and the commitment to local investment signal continued foreign direct investment in Ghana's mining sector. This could encourage other international companies to deepen their local engagement. Decision-makers will watch how ZGRL's initiatives impact local businesses and employment. The 2026 Invest Ghana Summit will provide a platform for further discussions on investment opportunities and partnerships. This will particularly focus on strategic sectors of the Ghanaian economy. The Ghana Club 100 Awards will also continue to recognize leading Ghanaian companies for their performance.
ZGRL's operations at the Akyem Gold Mine directly support 1,235 jobs. Of these, 597 individuals come from its 10 host communities. They are employed either directly by ZGRL or through its contractors. This focus on local employment helps to distribute economic benefits within mining communities. It also reduces unemployment rates in these areas.
Beyond economic contributions, ZGRL also stressed its commitment to environmental protection. The company has restored 317 hectares of land through a partnership with the Forestry Commission. This area is more than three times the land directly affected by its mining activities. ZGRL is also implementing Ghana’s first large-scale biodiversity offset programme in the mining sector. This 10-year conservation partnership in the Atewa landscape aims to protect and restore critical ecosystems. It also seeks to safeguard wildlife habitats in the region.
In another environmental initiative, ZGRL introduced 46 new-energy haul trucks. Many of these vehicles are fully electric. This move aims to reduce emissions and promote cleaner mining technologies. Mr. Zhang highlighted the company's guiding philosophy, “Mining for a Better Society.” He explained this means creating opportunities for Ghanaians, supporting local enterprise, and protecting the environment. It also ensures that investment benefits create value for future generations. These environmental efforts are crucial for sustainable development in Ghana's mining sector.
