Two killed, 14 injured in shooting after Nchiraa Yam Festival, police say

    The disturbance began as the chief of Nchiraa and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the palace after the festival ended, according to the Bono Regional Police Command.

    Two people were killed and 14 others injured when gunfire broke out after the Yam Festival celebration at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region, police said.

    The Bono Regional Police Command said the disturbance began at about 5:30pm on Saturday, October 3, at the Four Junction area of the town, after the festival programme had ended. Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to his palace when a gunshot was heard, according to a police statement dated October 5.

    Thirteen of the injured, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment, the statement said. The bodies of the two people who died have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Their identities have not been made public.

    Police said patrols have been intensified in Nchiraa and the situation is calm. The command told the Ghanaian Times on October 7 that no arrests had yet been made. It said every effort was being made to arrest anyone involved in the violence.
