Missing Children Ghana (MCG) has successfully reunited over 300 children with their families since beginning its work in May 2021. The organization issued a urgent plea for immediate reporting of missing children, stating that delays are the biggest barrier to rescue.
Regina Asamoah, Founder of MCG, stressed that the first three hours after a child goes missing are the most crucial. Many parents hesitate to report, fearing judgment or believing the child is simply playing nearby. This delay can allow a child to move too far, making them harder to find. MCG has handled over 700 police reports since its inception.
This situation highlights a critical public safety challenge in Ghana. Timely intervention by law enforcement and support organizations like MCG can prevent long-term trauma for both children and families. The organization’s efforts, while successful for many, underscore the scale of the problem, with many children still unaccounted for and some residing in orphanages despite having living relatives.
"When a child goes missing, every minute feels like an hour. But the hard truth is this: delays kill hope. If you wait even two hours to report because you think the child is ‘just playing outside’ or ‘with a neighbour,’ you may have already lost the trail. Act fast. Report immediately. There is no such thing as overreacting when a child’s life is at stake," stated Regina Asamoah. She also mentioned that many children in orphanages are not orphans but are lost and cannot provide basic identifying information.
MCG’s work also points to a growing threat from online predators. With increased internet access across Ghana, children are being groomed through social media and gaming apps. This grooming can lead to children leaving home willingly, believing they are meeting friends. Parents are urged to prioritize digital safety and maintain open communication about online activities. The organization asks parents to ensure children memorize essential information like phone numbers and hometowns, adding that this knowledge is vital for reunification.
