Ghanaian university sports face significant challenges. Funding is a considerable hurdle. Inadequate sporting infrastructure is another problem. These issues affect sports like badminton and table tennis. The President of GUSA, Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko, sought increased investment. He appealed to the government and stakeholders. This call comes after UCC's significant medal haul.
Mr. Tanko stated that the Mini GUSA Games are important. They help select athletes for international events. The main GUSA Games were postponed by UEW. This made the Mini GUSA Games more vital. They keep student-athletes active. The games promote unity and discipline. They also build leadership skills.
UCC secured 21 gold, 18 silver, and 11 bronze medals. This secured their first-place position. Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) came second. They won 39 medals. The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) placed third with 47 medals. UEW won the men’s football title. UCC excelled in table tennis and volleyball.
The games are a key part of the university sports calendar. They provide experience for athletes. These events are crucial for national integration. They help students connect beyond their campuses. The successful hosting by UPSA demonstrates organizational capacity. Future GUSA Games will build on this success. The funding needs remain a priority.
