The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is set to carry out significant planned maintenance exercises across three major regions on Wednesday, May 27, 2025. These essential works will result in temporary power disruptions. The outages are scheduled to last between four and seven hours in affected areas. This action aims to improve the overall quality of service provided by ECG to its customers.
In the Accra East Region, several areas will experience an extended shutdown. North Dzorwulu, parts of GIMPA, New England, Obediben, and Dzorwulu will be without power. The disruption in this zone is planned from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. This constitutes an eight-hour period of no electricity. The notice for this work was first issued on Friday, May 22. ECG stated this is a necessary step for better service delivery.
The Ashanti Region will face two separate power interruptions on the same day. One outage will affect Asewase town, Aboabo Number One and Number Two, Golden Temple, and Asewase Renault. This will last for four hours, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. A second, longer outage will impact communities around the Tech Commercial area. This includes the Tech hospital area and KNUST Senior High School. This disruption is scheduled from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, an eight-hour period. Both notices for the Ashanti Region were released during the weekend of May 23 and 24.
The Tema Region will also see its power supply interrupted. This outage is scheduled from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, a six-hour window. The affected areas are widespread. They include the Seawater Desalination Plant and several residential estates like Regimanuel Estates and Parakuo Estates. Key institutions like Queensland International School and Best Western Premier Hotel are also on the list. Significant parts of Nungua, including its Zongo and Township areas, will be affected. The Kpeshie Divisional Police Headquarters and Coco Beach are also included in the list.
ECG has issued an apology for any inconvenience these planned exercises may cause. The company strongly advises all customers in the affected communities to make alternative arrangements. This is for any activities that rely heavily on electricity during the specified outage periods. ECG confirmed that power supply would be fully restored once all maintenance work is successfully completed. These exercises are part of ECG’s broader commitment to upgrade its infrastructure and ensure reliable power across Ghana.
The company encourages customers to reach out through ECG’s official communication channels. This is for any further updates or clarification regarding the maintenance schedules. The economic impact of these outages, though temporary, can affect businesses reliant on constant power. This includes small enterprises and manufacturing units. The cumulative effect of such disruptions on productivity and operational costs is a concern for businesses.
These maintenance activities are critical for preventing more severe and unplanned power outages in the future. By proactively addressing potential issues, ECG aims to build a more resilient and efficient power grid. The company’s continued investment in upgrading its network infrastructure is a key factor for sustained economic activity. Reliable electricity supply is fundamental for industrial growth and everyday life in Ghana. Future plans from ECG could include more widespread maintenance or system upgrades, requiring similar customer advisories.
