The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will implement widespread power outages across the Eastern, Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Tema regions on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. These disruptions result from both scheduled maintenance works and an unresolved network fault in the Tema area. Thousands of residents and businesses will experience electricity cuts.

The planned outages will last up to nine hours in many locations, starting from 9:00 AM and ending at 5:00 PM. Affected areas in the Eastern Region include Osiem, Bososu, Hemang, parts of Tafo Township, Etukrom, and surrounding communities. Greater Accra's East Region will see similar disruptions in Adenta SDA, Tot-to-Teen, parts of Power Land, and Oyarifa. The Accra West Region will also face outages in places like SCC Junction, Oduman, and Kokrobite. In Tema, an existing network fault is already affecting Mobole and Afienya, with additional planned maintenance impacting Lebanon Zones Three and Four, Zenu, and Lashibi from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

These scheduled power cuts highlight the ongoing challenges Ghana faces in maintaining a consistent electricity supply. Such disruptions often impact economic productivity, as businesses contend with downtime and increased operational costs from alternative power sources. Data from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) consistently shows concerns about grid stability and the need for infrastructure upgrades. Planned maintenance, while disruptive, is crucial for preventing more severe, unplanned outages in the long term, which can cause significant economic losses across sectors.

ECG released advisories over the weekend confirming these disruptions. The company explained these exercises are necessary to improve overall service delivery. ECG expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to customers. For areas affected by network faults in Tema, ECG assured customers that engineers are actively working to restore power as quickly as possible.

The upcoming outages will likely lead to temporary but noticeable impacts on local economies in the affected regions. Businesses, particularly those reliant on consistent power, should prepare for reduced operations or increased reliance on generators. Consumers may also face challenges with household appliances and electronic devices throughout the day. Monitoring ECG's advisories will be crucial for residents and businesses to anticipate and manage these interruptions effectively. Decision-makers will observe the efficiency of power restoration and the broader implications for the national grid's reliability.

The Ashanti Region will experience the most extensive interruptions. Multiple notices confirm outages from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in areas including Mensahkrom, Kunka, Nana Ponko, and Binsre. A separate set of communities, such as Datano, Tontokrom, Watreso, and Aboaboso, will also be affected. A third notice for Ashanti lists Kwabenakwa, Asonkore, Alhaji Awal, and Adansi Asokwa among others. Some parts of Ashanti, like Okess SHS and Bremang UGC, will have a shorter three-hour maintenance window from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Meanwhile, Kyekyewere, Osam, and Kwapia will experience a full-day shutdown, underscoring the widespread nature of the planned works.
