GNFS contains 13,500 litres diesel spillage in Ashanti Region

A bulk tanker overturned near Liberty Fuel Station, spilling a significant volume of fuel but causing no casualties.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully contained a 13,500-litre diesel spillage in Odumase Afrancho, located near the Liberty Fuel Station off the Trede Road in the Ashanti Region. This significant incident involved a bulk tanker that overturned, leading to the substantial fuel leak. The prompt response by the GNFS prevented a potentially larger environmental and safety hazard in the area. The spillage occurred on Friday, August 8, 2026, when a Benz bulk tanker, registered AS 8307-Z, fell on its side. A steering lock reportedly caused the accident, resulting in multiple dents to the tanker's bulk tank and the subsequent release of approximately 13,500 litres of diesel. The incident was reported to the GNFS at 4:20 p.m., with the BOST Fire Post appliance arriving at the scene shortly thereafter at 5:02 p.m. Such fuel spillages, particularly involving large volumes of diesel, pose considerable risks to local ecosystems and public health. Ghana's economy relies heavily on petroleum products for transportation and industrial activities. Incidents like this highlight the critical need for robust safety protocols in fuel transportation and efficient emergency response mechanisms to mitigate economic and environmental fallout. The Ashanti Region, a key economic hub, depends on the smooth flow of goods, making disruptions from such incidents noteworthy. LFM Tuffour Kwakye Eugene led the firefighting team from the BOST Fire Post. Fire officers, working alongside personnel from other institutions, effectively managed the situation. They used foam to wash away the spilled diesel, ensuring the area was safely cleared. The collaborative effort underscores the importance of inter-agency cooperation during emergencies. The successful containment of the spillage means that no further environmental contamination occurred, and critically, no casualties were recorded. This outcome is vital for public confidence in emergency services and for preventing potential long-term health impacts on residents. Decision-makers will continue to monitor fuel transportation safety standards and emergency preparedness in the region to prevent future occurrences and protect Ghana's economic infrastructure.
