Ghana National Fire Service Flags Critical Fire Risks at Kpone Industrial Enclave

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has issued a stark warning about potential economic disaster stemming from inadequate fire safety in the Kpone industrial enclave. A significant fire incident in this area, which hosts vital energy and oil facilities, could cripple the nation's power supply and disrupt the availability of essential fuel products. Divisional Officer II Ebenezer Yenzu, the Tema Regional Public Relations Officer for the GNFS, highlighted these grave risks during a recent meeting. He emphasized that the Kpone enclave is a highly sensitive industrial zone, home to crucial state-owned and private installations. These include major players like the Sunon Asogli Power Plant, Quantum LPG, and Quantum Oil. The dense concentration of power generation, oil, and gas facilities creates a substantial fire hazard. Failure by operators to strictly follow safety rules could trigger a major industrial accident with national ramifications. DO II Yenzu stated that a large fire in the enclave could lead to "catastrophic shortages of oil and gas products and significantly affect electricity generation across the country." This places Ghana's energy security and overall economic stability under direct threat. The GNFS is intensifying its inspection and enforcement efforts within Kpone to ensure all facilities meet fire safety standards and emergency preparedness requirements. The Service is collaborating with facility operators to identify potential dangers, strengthen preventative actions, and lower the chances of industrial fires. The Tema Region has already witnessed a considerable number of fire outbreaks. Between January and April 2026, the region recorded 318 fire incidents. Approximately one-quarter of these occurred within the Kpone-Katamanso Municipality alone. This municipality is currently served by four fire stations: Katamanso, Akuse, the Industrial Area, and Community 25. The GNFS officer underscored the urgent need for industries and businesses operating in the Kpone enclave to prioritize safety compliance. This includes regular staff training and thorough maintenance of fire prevention systems. Such measures are vital to protect lives, property, and critical national infrastructure from potential devastation. The risk to Ghana's economic future is substantial if these safety concerns are not addressed proactively.
