Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has restored 550 megawatts (MW) of power generation at the Akosombo hydroelectric plant. This action recovers more than half of the 1,000 MW lost to a control room fire last week. Engineers successfully brought a fourth unit back online at the country's main hydropower facility.

This partial recovery is the most important step so far in stabilizing Ghana's power supply. The fire on April 23 forced a shutdown of Ghana's largest power source. This led to widespread power cuts across the nation.

Ghana's energy sector often faces capacity issues, leading to intermittent power supply, known locally as 'dumsor'. The sudden loss of 1,000 MW from Akosombo, a critical generation asset, amplified these existing challenges. This incident highlights the fragility of the national grid and the reliance on key infrastructure for consistent electricity provision.

Ing. Frank Otchere, GRIDCo's acting Chief Executive Officer, confirmed the restoration of the units. He stated that a joint engineering team from GRIDCo and the Volta River Authority (VRA) achieved this success. He added that work continues to bring remaining units and transmission lines back online. “Restoration activities are proceeding smoothly,” Ing. Otchere remarked, noting technical teams are working around the clock.

The successful restoration of 550 MW is crucial for easing the immediate power shortages. However, the full recovery of all lost capacity remains vital for long-term energy security. Power consumers and businesses will closely monitor the progress towards full operational capacity at Akosombo. The incident's investigation findings will also inform future critical infrastructure protection efforts.

The fire in the control room at the Akosombo switchyard caused a major disruption. It severely affected power evacuation from the dam. This event represents one of the most significant shocks to Ghana's electricity system in recent years. The Akosombo Dam is a cornerstone of Ghana's energy infrastructure, providing a substantial portion of the nation's electricity.

Board Chair Kukua Maurice Ankrah and board member Odeneho Kwafo Akoto III visited the site on April 24. Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor also undertook an emergency inspection. They met with engineers coordinating the recovery effort. The GRIDCo board held an emergency meeting on April 28 to discuss the incident and restoration progress.

An internal committee has begun investigating the fire's cause. This committee expects to deliver its findings within one week. Management will continue to monitor the situation closely. The board and management plan another visit to Akosombo on April 30 to assess ongoing progress.
