Ghana’s power supply saw a notable improvement in 2025 compared to 2024. Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor stated this on JoyNews. Available data clearly shows fewer power outages. He presented this as a factual achievement, not an opinion.
This marks progress from 2024. That year faced constant power interruptions nationwide. Every month in 2024 recorded outages. These were not brief periods but occurred consistently throughout. In contrast, 2025 has experienced entire months without load shedding in many regions. This signals a more stable national electricity grid.
Jinapor acknowledged that challenges persist. He admitted that reforms are ongoing. Some communities still face intermittent power cuts. He explained these are mostly due to local system faults. They are not signs of a national grid failure. These localized issues often stem from old and overloaded transformers. The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has confirmed many transformers are obsolete. They cannot meet the growing electricity demand. This leads to frequent power disruptions.
The government began a program to fix these issues. They aim to upgrade and replace faulty transformers. This process takes time to complete fully. Jinapor mentioned inheriting these problems. He said efforts to address them are underway. It is a gradual but necessary task. The government's initiative is to tackle these aging components.
Financially, there has been positive movement. Mr. Jinapor noted improvements in payments to independent power producers. They now receive full payments. This is under the cash waterfall mechanism. Previously, they only received 42 percent of their payments. This improved financial flow is vital for sustained power generation.
Infrastructure upgrades are also a priority. In Accra, primary substation transformers have seen replacements. This boosts bulk power distribution. The focus is now shifting to smaller, community-level transformers. About 83,000 transformers across Ghana need attention. Many are overloaded or outdated. A specific program is targeting these transformers. Mr. Jinapor is confident. Ongoing actions will resolve remaining isolated outages. They will further stabilize power supply nationwide.
He appealed for continued patience from Ghanaians. He stated that significant efforts have been made over the past three months. He believes isolated cases will be resolved soon. This reflects a commitment to a stable power future for the nation.
