Anlo-Afiadenyigba Senior High School (AFIASEC) in the Volta Region is grappling with serious problems regarding its water supply and security. The school, home to 800 students, has appealed for immediate action from authorities. These issues are directly hindering the educational process and the daily lives of its students and staff.
The Assistant Headmaster for Administration, Mr. Francis Seshie, highlighted the severity of the situation. Frequent water shortages disrupt lessons as students spend valuable time searching for water. This also impacts essential activities like cooking and maintaining hygiene in dormitories. The school has been forced to fetch water from nearby communities on weekends. This disrupts the normal academic schedule and places additional burdens on students and staff.
These are not isolated incidents. The broader Ghanaian education sector often faces infrastructure challenges. Many senior high schools, especially in less developed areas, struggle with inadequate facilities. The Ghana Education Service (GES) and local assemblies are responsible for ensuring schools have basic amenities. Resource allocation and maintenance of existing infrastructure remain key concerns for educational institutions across Ghana. The school's growing population of 800 students further strains its limited resources.
Mr. Seshie has directly appealed to the Ghana Education Service and the Keta Municipal Assembly. He stressed the urgent need for intervention. The Member of Parliament for the area, Mr. Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey, and the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Wisdom Seade, have acknowledged these challenges. They stated that discussions are underway with the Ghana Water Company Limited and the Electricity Company of Ghana to find solutions.
The ongoing lack of reliable water and sufficient security personnel creates an environment of anxiety. This is particularly concerning for students, especially after a recent fire incident in the boys' dormitory. Students have reported feeling unsafe moving around campus after dark. The school management hopes for a swift resolution to ensure a stable learning environment. Improved water and security are crucial for better academic performance and discipline.
